Summary- This standard expresses the importance for teachers to continue to grow. We should be lifelong learners and model this for our students so they are encouraged to learn constantly. Teachers should also be leaders in the community and help others to get more involved. Technology can be incorporated to encourage the use of more advanced technology to others, including students, parents, and entire community. If this is done in a modeling fashion, teachers can influence lots of people to continually learn, and not just about technology.

Reflection- I heard about lifelong learning when I was in college. I had never thought about the fact that people should always strive to learn as much as possible and never just stop. I learned this by observing the over sixty-five program at Anderson University. I was shocked at how many retired people went to school fun and really no credit. They wanted to learn and I think this should be a philosophy for everyone, not just teachers.

Summary- This standard reflects the use of values or morals teachers should set and follow for the use of technology in class. This begins with the safety and the concerns for information provided by students or found by them. It also includes legal issues with the teacher modeling and making sure students follow citation rules for everything they find and use. Basically, teachers need to be sure students effectively use technology in a reasonable and responsible way.

Reflection- This is really important to me since I teach English. Part of my standards includes teaching how to cite information after doing research or using someone else’s idea. If I do not model this with the items I teach with, I cannot tell my students to do so. I need to be responsible in teaching to do citations and modeling this. I also need to be sure to address safety with the use of citations and plagiarism as well.

Summary: This standard basically states that teachers should know and use the skills of a professional, just like in other professions. We should demonstrate the knowledge we have to students, parents, and the community. Our knowledge should include the use of technology, but should not be limited to what we know and are comfortable with. We still need to be learning new technology to exhibit and teach to those around us. This will help support what we teach since we show that we use it in our own profession; what is being taught.

Reflection: I feel that this supports what teachers should do daily. Teachers are some of the most professional people in the world, we have to be to deal with students, parents, and the community. Therefore, we should know all of the things we can to look professional, which includes the use of technology. We should also take this a step further to teach students what we know so they can be given the same opportunities to be professional. If this is done, then we have set another standard for what teaching should be.

Summary: In standard two, the main point was to address that teachers need to reflect on the way they teach. In other words, we are not perfect and just because something has worked, does not mean it will always work. We need to make sure to change things when needed and adapt to out students and environment. Under this statement teachers should look at the way they assess student work, make things personal, adapt, and include technology to best fit student needs.

Reflection: I think as a teacher, one common goal among the profession is to make sure students understand why something is being taught to them and also be able to observe that either they did learn what was taught or they did not learn what was taught. If students can reflect back and understand these two skills, the teacher has mastered the art of teaching, especially if students learned without feeling like they had to learn. This is what standard two for teachers is about, making sure we design, develop, and evaluate out teaching to maximize output for students. If we focus on teaching things that are relevant, personalized, and include variety as well as technology, we will optimize learning. It is important for teachers to want the best for students and if they follow these ideas then they will have more teaching moments.

Summary: This standard encourages a classroom focused on technology in addition to the classroom setup that has always been used. The course content, teacher friendliness, and environment are all recognized as essential, but this standard integrates the virtual classroom by the addition of technology. The standard addresses creativity, and other “think outside of the box” things that could be entered into the class through new technology. It also encourages a way to engage students in the lesson. Students are able to focus more on real world application to what is being taught.

Reflection: I feel that I use technology in the classroom to a certain extent, but the classroom still is not necessarily a virtual classroom. Although I use things in the classroom daily that are considered technologically advanced, I do not use newer programs or ideas. I feel that I am inadequate for this concept and need to learn some new things in order to make my class more “virtual.” I do; however, feel that students are still engaged and encouraged to “think outside the box.” I plan to use this class to learn more about what I can do in the classroom for the benefit of the students.
